NOAA's Climate Prediction Center wrote on July 21 that persistent high pressure was expected to elevate extreme heat risk across a large portion of the country for July 29 through August 4. The same outlook said hot weather and near or below normal rainfall increased the risk of rapid-onset drought in part of the northern Great Plains.
That does not mean a national food crisis is coming.

By December 1934, the USDA Yearbook of Agriculture warned that about 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land had essentially been destroyed for crop production. PBS's Dust Bowl timeline also notes that the federal Drought Relief Service bought cattle in emergency counties for $14 to $20 a head, and that more than half were initially judged unfit for human consumption in those areas.
The point is not that today's northern Plains signal equals the Dust Bowl. It does not. Forecasting is better. Farming is different. Supply chains are broader. Drought outlooks are warnings, not verdicts.
The useful pattern is timing.
Before the household feels scarcity, the land often records it first. Topsoil moves. Cattle feed gets tight. Crop conditions slip. Relief agencies, railroads, elevators, processors, and stores all see pieces of the problem before a family notices it as a missing sale, a smaller package, or a higher price.

Those farmers did not treat water as something to think about only when the crop was thirsty. They treated timing as the resource. A rainfall event was valuable only if the system was ready before it arrived. A dry spell was survivable only if the landscape had already been prepared to hold what came earlier.

A household pantry works the same way at a smaller scale. The useful moment to close a gap is not when everyone is already buying the same thing. It is when the outside signal is still distant enough that a bag of rice, a jar of peanut butter, oats, lentils, pasta, canned tomatoes, or shelf-stable milk is just a normal errand.
