August opens the faster-rising part of Atlantic hurricane season. NOAA's long-term hurricane records show activity usually climbs through August and reaches its broad peak around September 10.

That is a calendar signal, not a forecast for your address. Many storms stay at sea. Many households far from the coast never see hurricane winds.

Yet a large storm can press on roads, fuel, power, water systems, ports, delivery schedules, and store traffic well beyond the place where it lands.

PARALLEL 1: HURRICANE ANDREW, AUGUST 24, 1992

Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida before dawn on August 24, 1992.

The Category 5 storm tore roofs from homes, broke utility lines, damaged businesses, and cut a path across southern Miami-Dade County. The National Hurricane Center says Andrew caused 23 deaths in the United States and about $26.5 billion in damage at the time.

The eye moved through in hours. The access problem lasted much longer.

Power was out. Street signs were gone. Debris blocked roads. Phones failed. Stores, fuel stations, and normal delivery points could not simply reopen because the sky was blue again.

Relief supplies existed, but damaged roads, weak information, and huge need made distribution hard. People could stand near food and still not know when or where it would move.

Andrew changed building rules in Florida. It also changed the way emergency managers thought about supplies and response. The storm showed that the narrow point after impact may be the route, the loading site, the fuel pump, the local warehouse, or the last block.

Today's forecasts, building codes, emergency alerts, and logistics are better. A modern storm is not a replay of 1992.

But the household sequence still rhymes. First, a warning raises demand. Then a storm or outage narrows access. Finally, the system works to reopen paths.

A household with three days of simple food, water, light, and medicine information does not beat the storm. It avoids adding one more urgent trip to the narrowest part of the system.

PARALLEL 2: NABATAEAN PETRA

More than 2,000 years ago, the Nabataeans built Petra in a dry basin in what is now Jordan.

Rain was rare, but sudden desert floods could be violent. The city needed to solve two opposite problems: too little water most days and too much water in a short storm.

Nabataean builders cut channels into rock, built dams, used settling basins, and stored water in covered cisterns. The system slowed fast runoff and moved part of it toward storage.

Petra's famous carved buildings get the pictures. The quiet water work made the city possible.

Covered storage helped reduce loss and dirt. Distributed cisterns also meant the whole city did not lean on one open pool. Water was captured when nature offered it, then released over time.

The clever part was not simply having a lot of water.

It was putting space between supply and use.

The Nabataean system was far larger and more skilled than a tote on a pantry shelf. Ancient Petra also faced a climate, culture, and public system unlike a modern American home.

Still, the storage rule travels well. A rare flow is most useful when you catch some before the narrow season. That might mean water before a storm warning, batteries before the first outage, or a printed medicine list before the pharmacy closes.

You are not trying to store everything. Petra did not put every drop in one jar.

You are building a small buffer at the narrow point. Three days is enough to turn an immediate need into a planned next step.
