THE CURRENT SIGNAL

On August 14, the Census Bureau reported that combined manufacturing and trade sales were $2.1113 trillion in June, down 1.1% from May but up 10.0% from a year earlier.

Inventories were $2.7402 trillion, virtually unchanged from May and up 3.0% from a year earlier.

The business inventories-to-sales ratio was 1.30, compared with 1.39 a year earlier.

That ratio is useful because it connects stock to flow.

Your pantry needs the same mental model.

Ten cans sounds good.

Ten cans used in two days is not the same buffer as ten cans used in two weeks.

U.S. PARALLEL: THE BERLIN AIRLIFT WAS A FLOW PROBLEM

The Berlin Airlift made stock-to-flow visible: the city needed enough arriving every day to match what it consumed.

In June 1948, the Soviet Union blocked ground access to the western sectors of Berlin.

The historical stakes were far bigger than a household pantry, so the comparison must stay narrow.

But the arithmetic is the same.

Your supply is only meaningful in relation to your burn rate.

If you use two gallons of drinking water a day, eight gallons means four days.

If a pet eats one can a day, twelve cans means twelve days.
