One blocked road can turn a small disruption into a household shortage.

This week’s Midwest flooding closed roads, cut access, knocked out power, and forced rescues across several states. In one Ohio case, flooded roads even kept first responders from reaching a person having a medical emergency.

Self-reliance is not having one good route. It is knowing the second route before the first one fails.

HOW MANY DAYS OF FOOD ARE BETWEEN YOUR HOUSE AND A CLOSED ROAD?

A road closure is inconvenient when the pantry has margin. It becomes urgent when every meal still depends on the next grocery run.

Associated Press reporting from Indiana says days of heavy rain and flooding killed at least seven people, damaged roads and homes, triggered evacuations, and left many communities in recovery mode.

That matters beyond flood zones. Roads fail for snow, fire, crashes, fallen trees, bridge problems, construction, and power outages. The weak point is often not the thing you need. It is the path between you and the thing you need.

A self-reliant household keeps the route visible. If the pharmacy across town becomes unreachable, what is the second pharmacy or refill plan? If the normal grocery store is cut off, what can you eat without going anywhere? If a family member needs to leave, what road avoids the low crossing?

WATER IS A ROUTE TOO — UNTIL THE TAP IS THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE

This at-home water system is built around a simple self-reliance principle: reduce the number of miles and handoffs between your household and a critical input.

PARALLEL 1: 1993 SHOWED HOW FAST TRANSPORT CAN BECOME THE SHORTAGE

During the Great Flood of 1993, the Missouri and Mississippi rivers did more than flood towns. They broke transportation networks.

The National Weather Service says the flood covered a nine-state region and lasted nearly 200 days in some places. Hundreds of levees failed. Bridges were closed or inaccessible. Barge traffic on the Missouri and Mississippi stopped for nearly two months.

That meant a product could exist and still be unavailable where it was needed. Grain, fuel, equipment, workers, and emergency supplies all depended on routes.

Families learned the same lesson at a smaller scale. A normal drive could become impossible. A nearby town could suddenly be on the wrong side of the water. Higher ground mattered. Alternate roads mattered. Having supplies already inside the home mattered.

The 1993 flood was an extreme regional event. A modern road closure may be one washed-out bridge. The narrow lesson is the same: distance is not measured only in miles. It is measured in usable routes.

PARALLEL 2: THE INKA BUILT REDUNDANCY INTO DISTANCE

The Inka governed a huge territory across mountains, deserts, valleys, and high plateaus. Moving people and goods across that landscape was a permanent challenge.

Their answer was the Qhapaq Ñan, an Andean road network that UNESCO says covered roughly 30,000 kilometers and connected political, trade, military, and production centers across some of the most difficult terrain on Earth.

The roads were only part of the system. Along them were places for accommodation and storage. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian describes state storehouses called colcas that held food, clothing, raw materials, and other goods for redistribution. Some centers contained hundreds of them.

That meant the system did not depend on moving every needed item from the capital at the moment of crisis. Useful goods were staged along the network.

Your household does not need an empire’s road system. The useful operating idea is smaller: pair a route with a reserve. If the route fails, the reserve buys time. If the reserve runs low, the second route buys options.

Across BOTH examples, the pattern is this: resilience rises when critical needs have both a second path and something already stored nearby.

Do not build a giant emergency plan. Give three critical needs one alternate path each.

  2. Beside PEOPLE, write your normal exit route and one route that avoids the lowest bridge, underpass, or flood-prone road nearby.

  3. Beside FOOD, write your normal store and the meals already in your house that require no trip.

  4. Beside MEDICINE, write the normal pharmacy and the phone number or second location you would use if access changed.

  5. Put the card in the glove box and save a photo on your phone.

Measured improvement: three critical household needs no longer depend on one invisible route.
