What’s happening now?

USPS has posted its 2026 holiday shipping dates. That is your cue to check addresses while there is still time to ask, “Are you at the same place this year?” One missing apartment number can undo a lot of careful packing.

There is another small step before you tape the box: put the destination address inside. USPS recommends it. If the outside label gets damaged, the package has another way to say where it belongs.

Has this happened before?

On January 1, 1913, Parcel Post opened a new way for Americans to send packages. Rural families gained access to goods that had been harder or more expensive to get. The address on a box connected a household to a much larger system.

What happened next?

That system now handles far more parcels, but the simple need remains. Someone sorting a package has to know where it goes.

A tracking number helps you follow the trip. A second address slip helps preserve the destination. Give important information a backup where it will still be useful if the first copy disappears.

What can I do?

Pick one person you expect to send a package to. Confirm the street address, apartment number, and ZIP Code. Write the recipient’s name and full address on a slip, with your return address. Put the slip with your packing supplies.

When you pack, put it inside before taping the box. Remove old labels from reused boxes. Check the carrier’s current deadline for that destination and service; a recommended send-by date is not a promise that every package will arrive on time.
